## Understanding Anahata

The term "Anahata" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "hata," which means hitting or striking, and "ana," meaning not. Thus, Anahata literally translates to "unstruck sound." This chakra is considered the seat of purusha, or pure consciousness, which permeates all existence. It serves as the center of love and compassion, allowing individuals to connect with the all-pervading consciousness and embrace inclusivity.

## Location and Symbolism

The Anahata chakra is located at the center of the spine, positioned between the lower and upper chakras. Its symbol consists of two intersecting triangles, representing the balance between the three lower and three upper chakras.

Shloka 22 of the Shat Chakra Nirupanam describes the Anahata chakra as follows:

> तस्योर्ध्वे हृदि पङ्कजं सुललितं बन्धूककान्त्युज्ज्वलं काद्यैर्द्वादशवर्णकैरुपहितं सिन्दूररागन्वितैः.

This verse indicates that the Anahata chakra is situated above the maNipUraka chakra, shining with the color of the Bandhuka flower and possessing twelve petals of vermillion hue. The sounds associated with these petals are:

## The Beeja Mantra and Associated Deities

The next shloka introduces the beeja mantra, or root sound, associated with the Anahata chakra:

> तन्मध्ये पवनाक्षरं च मधुरं धूमावलीधूसरं ध्ययेत्पाणिचतुष्टयेन लसितं कृष्णाधिरूढं परं.

The root sound is "yam," symbolizing the element of wind. This chakra is also associated with the lord of winds, Vayu, depicted with two hands and seated on a black antelope. The Anahata chakra also contains a shiva linga, similar to the mUlAdhAra chakra, along with a corresponding shakti. This is described in the following verse:

> एतन्नीरजकर्णिकान्तरलसच्छक्तिस्त्रिकोणाभिधा विद्युत्कोटिसमानकोमलवपुः सास्ते तदन्तर्गतः.

Within the Anahata lotus lies a triangle representing feminine energy, shining with the brilliance of countless lightnings, alongside the bANa lingam, which is golden and symbolizes wealth.

## Benefits of Activating Anahata

The benefits of working on the Anahata chakra are profound. Shloka 26 states:

> ध्ययेद्यो हृदि पङ्कजं सुरतरुं सर्वस्य पीठालयं.
